British intelligence says Russia loses information war in Ukraine
“So far, President Putin has comprehensively lost the information war in Ukraine and in the West. Although that’s cause for celebration, we should not underestimate how Russian disinformation is playing out elsewhere in the world,” Sir Jeremy Fleming, Director of GCHQ, the UK’s Intelligence, Cyber and Security Agency, writes in an op-ed for The Economist.
As noted, Russia has used the same playbook before as in Syria and the Balkans as the disinformation is a major part of Russia’s campaign.
“Just as with its land invasion, Russia’s initial online plans appear to have fallen short. The country’s use of offensive cyber tools has been irresponsible and indiscriminate,” Fleming notes.
However, he added, the British intelligence was able to learn about Russia's intentions in cyberspace and warn allies in advance.
