No split in Iran's border with Armenia due to Zangazur corridor, Baku says

    POLITICS  23 September 2022 - 20:21

A spokesperson for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry Leyla Abdullayeva has said that the supreme commander-in-chief congratulated the Azerbaijani and Iranian peoples on the liberation of the Azerbaijani-Iranian border during the 44-day second Karabakh war, which was under occupation.

The spokesperson was commenting on the information that the Iranian side thinks that the Zangazur corridor divides the Iranian-Armenian border and whether this issue was discussed during the talks with the Iranian side, Caliber.Az reports.

“The Azerbaijani side assesses its borders with Iran as an opportunity for further development of trade and cooperation,” Abdullayeva said.

“As a result of the Armenian occupation, the railway route was broken not only with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, which is an integral part of Azerbaijan but also with Iran. According to the tripartite statement dated November 10, 2020, discussions on opening and restoring routes in the region are underway within the Commission,” she said.

The spokesperson noted that in parallel, the Azerbaijani side signed an agreement with Iran on the creation of an infrastructure that will pass through Iran and connect the East Zangazur economic region of Azerbaijan with the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. According to the agreement, a road bridge laying ceremony was held in the Zangilan district on September 22, 2022 in the presence of officials from both countries.

“The assertion that the Zangazur corridor divides the border between Iran and Armenia is fundamentally false and far from reality. On the contrary, the Zangazur corridor is an important project that intensifies relations between our countries and promises new prospects for regional cooperation,” she said.
