Seoul: UN Security Council ignores Pyongyang's illegal behavior
South Korean Defence Minister Lee Jong-sup criticised the UN Security Council's reaction to Pyongyang's actions.
The minister told Singapore's Shangri-La Dialogue security conference that "countries with important responsibilities" at the UN Security Council are ignoring Pyongyang's "illegal behaviour" while North Korea's missile and nuclear programs are causing a weapons race, Anadolu reports.
"Despite an unprecedented number of missile launches last year, not a single new UN Security Council resolution has been adopted," he said.
Pyongyang's "reckless" development of missiles and nuclear weapons is fueling fears of nuclear proliferation, he said.
"This exacerbates the security dilemma, which is the rising cost of security for all countries," the minister noted.
Lee Jong-sup noted that the lack of reaction to Pyongyang's actions will lead to a deterioration in the security situation not only in the region but also on the planet.
In addition, the minister called on the international community to comply with sanctions against North Korea and condemn its missile launches in order to help Pyongyang return to negotiations on denuclearisation.
