Azerbaijani, Russian top diplomats discuss anti-terrorist measures in Garabagh
POLITICS 23 September 2023 - 09:19
Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on September 22 within the framework of participation in the high-level week of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
The sides discussed cooperation between the two countries, as well as the latest situation in the region, Caliber.Az reports with reference to the press service of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
Jeyhun Bayramov expressed condolences to the Russian Federation and the families of the victims in connection with the death of members of the Russian peacekeeping contingent during anti-terrorist activities in the Garabagh region of Azerbaijan. It was noted that an investigation is being conducted on the issue.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Minister informed the opposite side in detail about the anti-terrorist measures carried out in the Garabagh region against the illegal Armenian armed formations, which continued their presence contrary to international law and the trilateral statement of November 10, 2020, signed between the leaders of Azerbaijan, Russia, and Armenia.
It was noted that the anti-terrorist activities, which lasted less than 24 hours, ended successfully and put an end to the military presence financed and supported by Armenia in the later stages and even in the post-conflict period.
It was brought to the attention that practical steps are currently being taken in coordination with the Russian peacekeeping contingent temporarily deployed in the region towards the removal of ammunition from the Armenian armed forces.
It was also stressed that in parallel with this process, the dialogue towards the reintegration of the Armenian inhabitants of the Garabagh region is progressing, in particular, in accordance with the results of the meeting held recently in Yevlakh city between the central authorities of Azerbaijan and the representatives of the local Armenian residents, the work is being carried out to meet the needs of the peaceful population living in the region. In this regard, Minister Jeyhun Bayramov expressed confidence that the anti-terrorist activities will increase the intensity of the work carried out both in terms of establishing peace and security in the region and reintegration of the Armenian residents.
The sides also exchanged views on other issues on the agenda of cooperation between the two countries.
