4.7 quake strikes near Azerbaijan’s Lankaran district
An earthquake of 4.7 magnitude occurred 4 km northeast of Azerbaijan’s Lankaran district, the United States Geological Survey reports.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 55.6 km beneath the epicentre near Lankaran in the morning on July 26, at 11:03 am local time, VolcanoDiscovery reports.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 4.7, and Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) at magnitude 4.5.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicentre.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lankaran (pop. 240,300) located 4 km from the epicentre, Boradigah (pop. 5,900) 22 km away, Āstārā (pop. 39,100) 39 km away, and Prishibinskoye (pop. 13,300) 45 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sovetabad (pop. 4,300) located 69 km from the epicenter, Banka (pop. 7,100) 77 km away, Pushkino (pop. 18,200) 81 km away, and Salyan (pop. 36,600) 92 km away.
