Arab League hails US-Iran talks on nuclear program
The countries of the Arab League (AL) have expressed their support for the ongoing negotiations between the United States and Iran aimed at resolving the situation around Tehran’s nuclear program, as stated in a declaration adopted following the organisation’s summit held in Baghdad.
"We affirm that the growing tension on the international stage indicates a weakening of diplomacy and an increasing reliance on force to resolve conflicts and disputes," the document reads, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
"In this context, we express support for the talks between Iran and the United States, aimed at achieving positive outcomes regarding the peaceful use of nuclear energy, as well as ensuring that the level of uranium enrichment does not exceed the [thresholds] necessary for peaceful purposes," the Arab leaders emphasized, noting Oman’s mediating role in the consultations between Washington and Tehran.
Summit participants in the Iraqi capital also reaffirmed the need to establish a "zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction" in the Middle East. In this regard, the Arab leaders called on "all interested parties to join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons."
On May 11, Iran and the United States held their fourth round of negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program under Oman’s mediation. The Iranian delegation was headed by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, while the US side was led by President Trump’s special envoy Stephen Witkoff. According to the Iranian foreign minister, this round was more serious and candid than previous ones, and the positions of the parties have drawn closer. On May 16, US President Donald Trump stated that Washington had sent Tehran a written proposal aimed at resolving the situation.
