Armenia takes step towards EU accession as opposition stays silent
The Armenian Parliament’s Standing Committee on European Integration has approved the inclusion of a bill initiating the process of EU membership into the main agenda of its upcoming session.
The session is scheduled to take place from February 11 to 14, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“I propose to include the bill in the main agenda of the Armenian Parliament during the session from February 11 to 14,” stated the committee’s chairman, Arman Yeghoyan.
Following a discussion, the matter was put to a vote and received support from committee members.
Deputies from the opposition "Armenia" party faction abstained from the vote.
Note that, in 2023, Pashinyan told the European Parliament that Armenia was ready to move as close to the EU as possible, although he stopped short of backing full membership.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Russia needed to understand Brussels' position, and that Armenia could not join the EU while remaining a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, a trading bloc of some post-Soviet countries.
Though Armenia's relations with the EU are warm, joining will not be easy.
