Prime Minister Pashinyan hails new chapter in Armenia-Azerbaijan relations

09 August 2025 02:23

On August 8, during a landmark joint press conference in Washington, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan addressed the media alongside President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and U.S. President Donald Trump, marking a significant breakthrough in Armenia-Azerbaijan relations.

In his speech, Pashinyan emphasized that the agreement reached represents a pivotal step toward ending decades of conflict between the two nations. He expressed gratitude to President Trump for his personal engagement and unwavering commitment to fostering peace in the region, Caliber.Az reports.

“This breakthrough simply would not have been possible without President Trump’s personal engagement and his resolute commitment to peace in our region,” Pashinyan stated. He highlighted that the peace agreement lays the foundation for a new era based on full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries.

“The initialling of the peace agreement will pave the way to end decades of conflict between our countries and open a new era based on full respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other,” Pashinyan said.

The declarations signed during the event, which President Trump also personally endorsed and witnessed, aim to open a chapter of peace, prosperity, security, and economic cooperation across the South Caucasus.

Prime Minister Pashinyan also underlined plans for regional connectivity, revealing that Armenia will collaborate with the United States to implement the “Trump Route” — a strategic infrastructure and connectivity project designed to unlock economic opportunities throughout the region. This initiative is expected to promote long-term benefits, infrastructure development, and enhance U.S. leadership in conflict resolution.

“This is a great deal we achieve today and a great success for our countries, for our region, and for the world as well—because a more peaceful region means a safer world,” Pashinyan said, describing the agreement as “peace through strength.”

Concluding his remarks, Pashinyan praised President Trump’s leadership and vision, quoting the Holy Bible: “Blessed are the peacemakers. They will be called children of God.” He offered congratulations to all parties involved, underscoring the historic importance of the moment for the region and the world.

The peace agreement signals a hopeful turning point in the South Caucasus, offering prospects for stability, cooperation, and economic growth after decades of hostility.
