Russian intelligence: French foreign legionnaires training in Poland to fight in Ukraine
French Foreign Legionnaires, predominantly from Latin American countries, are reportedly undergoing intensive combat training in Poland near the Ukrainian border.
According to the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), these troops are preparing for potential deployment to Ukraine to assist Kyiv's forces. The training is said to focus on specialised combat skills, including urban warfare and high-altitude operations, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
The SVR's statement suggests that the French Armed Forces General Staff is considering deploying up to 2,000 soldiers and officers to Ukraine.
In response, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticised French President Emmanuel Macron's stance, implying that the French president's understanding of history and military affairs is lacking. Zakharova also suggested that Macron should focus on securing French cultural sites rather than engaging in military interventions abroad, referring to the recent Louvre heist.
According to the intelligence intel, Macron has previously mentioned the possibility of deploying a multinational peacekeeping force, though no consensus has been reached among Western allies. The Russian government has expressed strong opposition to such deployments, warning of the risks of direct confrontation with NATO forces.
