Armenia thwarts coup attempt, PM Pashinyan says
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has accused powerful domestic circles of plotting a coup and attempting to destabilise the country, claiming the plan was thwarted by law enforcement agencies.
Pashinyan made the remarks in a Facebook post on June 24, alleging that a “large-scale and vile” conspiracy had been orchestrated by what he described as “criminal-oligarchic and clerical” groups, Caliber.Az reports.
“Law enforcement agencies have prevented a massive and despicable plan by criminal-oligarchic-clerical circles aimed at destabilising the Republic of Armenia and seizing power,” Pashinyan wrote, without providing additional details.
The prime minister’s statement comes amid ongoing political tensions in Armenia, where opposition groups and some elements within the influential church have criticised his government’s policies, particularly regarding relations with Russia and normalisation efforts with neighbouring Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
