Armenian politician detained in Russia for alleged calls to overthrow government
In a development stirring political intrigue, Tigran Urikhanyan, head of the Armenian "Alliance" party has been detained in Russia at the behest of Armenian authorities.
The arrest follows allegations of Urikhanyan's involvement in advocating for the overthrow of the Armenian government, blogger Vardan Ghukasyan posted on social media platforms, Caliber.Az reports.
Urikhanyan, who previously secured a seat on the Yerevan Council of Elders under Ghukasyan's party banner, found himself embroiled in controversy when a criminal case was initiated against him in Armenia for purportedly inciting anti-government sentiments but the politician managed to escape. Later his powers were terminated
Reports indicate that the charges against Urikhanyan stem from a video he shared on social media in September 2023, wherein he allegedly urged citizens to take to the streets in protest, a move deemed as a call for the violent overthrow of the constitutional order.
