Armenian president eyes direct trade with Azerbaijan amid historic peace push
Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan expressed optimism that goods from Azerbaijan could eventually be delivered directly to Armenia, signaling a potential milestone in bilateral economic ties. He made the remarks while speaking at a panel discussion during the annual World Economic Forum in Davos.
Khachaturyan emphasized that the leaders of Azerbaijan and Armenia have already demonstrated political will and courage in advancing the peace process, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The Armenian president noted that just one or two years ago such a situation seemed unbelievable, but today the sides are at a fundamentally new stage in their relations.
The Armenian president noted that currently, Azerbaijani goods reach Armenia via transit through Georgia, but direct transportation between Baku and Yerevan may be possible in the future. He added that this development would help overcome challenges stemming from the 1990s and allow both countries to focus on future cooperation.
Khachaturyan also underscored that the agreements reached are grounded in concrete principles, including mutual respect for territorial integrity, sovereignty, and jurisdiction. He expressed confidence that opening the borders would be the next logical step in developing bilateral relations.
Turning to the broader regional perspective, the president highlighted the potential for cooperation to transform the South Caucasus into a politically and economically favorable region, particularly in terms of connectivity between Europe and Asia.
Khachaturyan extended gratitude to the Azerbaijani leadership, and personally to President Ilham Aliyev, for their political will, as well as to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for his commitment to the peace process. He also acknowledged the role of US President Donald Trump, who, he said, facilitated the signing of the historic document on August 8, 2025.
