Armenians plan to commit provocation at Sweden-Azerbaijan football match

24 February 2023 17:16

Chairman of the Azerbaijanis Congress of Sweden Emil Mirzoyev has said that members of the Armenian community in Sweden intend to commit a provocation at the Sweden-Azerbaijan football match.

“The match will be held in Stockholm on March 27 as part of the qualifying stage of the European Football Championship,” Mirzoyev told Report.

“I was warned by friends who currently work in law enforcement agencies in Sweden and are Congressmen,” he added.

“We were told that the Armenians want to buy tickets for the match with Azerbaijan and commit a provocation. The Armenians plan to bring posters with slogans against the protest of Azerbaijani environmental activists on the Khankendi-Lachin road,” the chairman added.

Mirzoyev emphasised that an appeal has already been sent to the corresponding organisations in connection with this issue.

“Our ambassador Zaur Ahmadov has already raised this issue. According to Swedish law, no political slogans can be used at a football match. Citizens of other country cannot buy tickets to the sector intended for our fans. We would like law enforcement officers to control this situation. A few days before the match, we also want to raise this issue with the Swedish Football Association,” he added.

The Azerbaijanis Congress of Sweden is thoroughly preparing for the upcoming match.

“We are doing our best to attract as many people as possible to the match through our ambassador’s support. There will be Azerbaijani fans in the 115th, 116th, 117th and 118th sectors. We have representatives of the associations in many Swedish cities. Congressmen, chairmen of associations will come to the capital,” the chairman said.

Mirzoyev reminded that the Armenians have repeatedly tried to commit a provocation.

“We clashed with the Armenian diaspora here during the April battles in 2016. We organised rallies. The Armenians blocked the road and smashed the cars of some of our compatriots,” he said.

The match, to be held at the Friends Arena in Stockholm on March 27, will start at 22:45 (GMT+4).
