ASELSAN reveals advanced ground-based air defence system at Eurosatory 2024 PHOTO/VIDEO

22 June 2024 17:00

Turkish defence firm ASELSAN has introduced SKYDOME, a state-of-the-art ground-based air defence system aimed at addressing the increasingly diverse array of modern airborne threats, Caliber.Az reports via SavunmaSanayiST.com.

Ahmet Akyol, CEO of the ASELSAN, unveiled the new system at the Eurosatory 2024 international exhibition in Paris.

Alongside SKYDOME, ASELSAN showcased integrated solutions spanning electronic warfare, enemy detection systems, and communications technologies.

Given the rise of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and their tactical deployment, effective air defence has become paramount. The SKYDOME system is specifically designed to offer robust protection against various airborne threats, including drone swarms and saturation munitions. It features early-warning radars and capabilities for engaging aerial targets across short and long ranges.

Among its components is the 35mm KORKUT SAM, which replaces the Turkish Armed Forces' outdated M42A1 Duster systems. KORKUT is a self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system mounted on the ACV-30 platform, equipped with dual 35mm cannons. It integrates advanced guidance systems, including a sophisticated radar fire control system and electro-optical sensors, ensuring precise operation in diverse combat scenarios.

Akyol emphasized that employing such air defence systems against kamikaze drones and barrage munitions represents a significantly more cost-effective strategy than relying on surface-to-air missiles for similar targets.
