Axios publishes draft US–Iran memorandum on de-escalation deal
Axios has published the text of a draft memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, which could serve as the basis for a future agreement aimed at reducing tensions in the Middle East.
According to the document, it envisages an immediate cessation of hostilities and a mutual commitment by both sides to refrain from the use of force against each other. Within 60 days, the parties are expected to prepare a final agreement, with the possibility of extending this deadline.
Certain provisions concern shipping and energy. The United States would be required, within 30 days of the memorandum entering into force, to lift the maritime blockade on Iran, while Tehran would ensure the restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. The document also provides for the phased resumption of trade routes following the clearance of mines in the area, and a gradual easing of sanctions on Iran, subject to compliance with conditions, including restrictions in the nuclear field. Iran confirms its commitment not to develop nuclear weapons and undertakes to reduce or reprocess its stockpile of enriched uranium under the supervision of the IAEA.
In turn, the United States commits not to impose new sanctions or expand its military presence in the region until a final agreement is concluded.
The draft also refers to a possible economic support package for Iran worth at least $300 billion.
