Azerbaijan engages Iraq in discussion on COP29, global climate goals
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iraq, Nasir Mammadov, recently met with Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein.
Mammadov shared the details of the meeting on social platform X, where both parties discussed the bilateral agenda and underscored the importance of mutual support in international organizations, Caliber.Az reports.
During the talks, Minister Hussein was informed about Azerbaijan’s ongoing preparations for the upcoming COP-29, including the country's global ceasefire initiative within the event's framework.
Earlier in April, Ambassador Mammadov had a meeting with the President of Iraq, Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, during which he presented a formal invitation from Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev, inviting Iraq to the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Iraqi President graciously accepted the invitation and expressed his appreciation for Azerbaijan’s commitment to hosting this pivotal event.
COP29, scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan in November, follows a decision made during the COP28 session in Dubai in December 2023. Baku is set to welcome between 70,000 to 80,000 international participants over two weeks. Established during the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the UNFCCC focuses on mitigating the effects of human activity on the climate. The COP meetings, attended by 198 member states, are the convention's decision-making body, with the first session held in Berlin in 1995.
As the world looks ahead to COP29, the focus will centre on fostering collaborative solutions to the global climate crisis, with particular emphasis on the role of human capital in promoting sustainable development and resilience.
