Azerbaijan, Iran discuss Caspian Sea issues
Azerbaijan and Iran have held talks on the Caspian Sea issues, Azerbaijani Embassy in Iran announced.
“Azerbaijani Ambassador to Iran Ali Alizada met with Iran's Assistant Foreign Minister for Caspian Sea Affairs Alireza Jahangiri. The Caspian Sea and bilateral issues were discussed at the meeting,” Caliber.Az quotes the Embassy as saying on its X page.
Both Azerbaijan and Iran have expressed a commitment to strengthening their cooperation in the Caspian region, recognizing the sea's strategic significance for trade, energy, and transportation.
The Caspian Sea has been a focal point of geopolitical interest due to its vast reserves of oil and natural gas, making it a key energy corridor for regional and global markets. However, the sea's legal status has been a longstanding issue.
The 2018 Convention on the Legal Status of the Caspian Sea, signed by Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan, marked a significant step toward resolving disputes over territorial waters and resource management. Despite the convention, certain issues remain unresolved, such as the delineation of seabed boundaries and the division of natural resources.
In recent years, Azerbaijan and Iran have worked to enhance their bilateral relations, particularly concerning the Caspian Sea. Both countries have shown a keen interest in cooperating on various fronts, including economic development, environmental sustainability, and regional security. These discussions are viewed as part of ongoing efforts to foster greater cooperation and stability in the Caspian region.
