Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan to ink green energy agreement at COP29 Energy minister announces

18 October 2024 11:31

Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan are set to formalize an intergovernmental agreement focused on strategic partnership in the development and transfer of green energy during COP29.

This announcement comes from Azerbaijani Energy Minister Perviz Shahbazov in an article published in the official press on October 18, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

Shahbazov highlighted Azerbaijan's pivotal role in a new energy corridor originating from Central Asia. He emphasized that one of the project's key tasks is to establish a joint venture based in Baku. “Among our plans for COP29 is the signing of the 'Intergovernmental Agreement on Strategic Partnership in the Development and Transmission of Green Energy between Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan' within the framework of the Investment Forum on Energy Transition for Central Asia,” he wrote.

Furthermore, discussions are underway regarding the practical implications of connecting the “Green Energy Corridor” from the Caspian-Black Sea region to Europe with Central Asia.

The draft agreement outlines the parties' intentions to organize clean energy supplies to Europe and beyond while promoting cooperation in new technologies and enhancing energy efficiency and conservation services. The agreement will remain in effect indefinitely.

It's noteworthy that on May 1, 2024, during the Tashkent International Investment Forum, the energy ministers of Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan signed a memorandum of cooperation to interconnect the energy systems of the three countries. This document envisions the exploration of connecting their energy systems through the installation of a high-voltage cable along the Caspian Sea bed and through other territories, enabling the supply of green energy from these three nations to Europe.

Scheduled for November, COP29 will turn Baku into a global hub, welcoming approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international guests. This decision was made during the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system.

The acronym COP stands for "Conference of the Parties," the highest decision-making body responsible for overseeing the implementation of the UNFCCC, which has 198 member states. The COP meets annually unless otherwise decided by the parties. The inaugural COP event took place in Berlin in March 1995, with its secretariat located in Bonn.
