Azerbaijan repatriates 12 citizens held in Syria
On September 10, 2022, 12 Azerbaijani citizens were repatriated from the Amerna camp in the Syrian city of Jerablus. A brother and sister, aged 7 and 10, lost both parents.
The return of repatriates to the country was realised as a result of phased and coordinated measures of the Azerbaijani government, Caliber.Az reports citing the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry.
First, their place, identity and citizenship in Azerbaijan were established, then, based on the agreement reached, their transit through Türkiye was ensured.
The representatives of the working group sent to Türkiye, which includes the relevant state structures responsible for the repatriation of Azerbaijani citizens from Iraq and Syria, conducted a preliminary medical and psychological examination of the repatriates and provided the necessary assistance. The Azerbaijani Embassy in Türkiye also provided our citizens with certificates of return to Azerbaijan and air tickets.
Upon completion of the necessary procedures, the repatriates will be transferred to their families and guardians.
The Azerbaijani government will take all necessary measures for their reintegration and rehabilitation.
The joint and coordinated activities of the relevant state institutions of Azerbaijan, as well as the assistance provided by Türkiye, should be particularly noted in the implementation of repatriation.
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry takes this opportunity to express its gratitude to all relevant state institutions for effective and efficient cooperation in organising this process.
The Azerbaijani government continues to take the necessary measures to protect the rights and freedoms of Azerbaijani citizens in difficult situations in foreign countries and in need of assistance, in accordance with national legislation and international treaties to which our country is a party, the Foreign Ministry notes.
