Greece hails Baku-Yerevan peace agreements as key step toward normalisation
Greece’s Foreign Ministry has issued a statement welcoming the Washington agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan, considering them an important step toward ending decades of conflict in the South Caucasus.
“Greece welcomes the announced agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan as a significant step towards ending decades of conflict in South Caucasus,” the Ministry wrote on X, per Caliber.Az.
The Ministry added: “We commend both sides and the US Administration for making progress towards the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan possible.”
On August 8, U.S. President Donald Trump hosted a historic trilateral summit at the White House with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This was the first meeting of its kind between the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and the United States since the dissolution of the Soviet Union. During the summit, the parties signed a joint declaration and the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia initialed a draft peace agreement titled the “Agreement on Establishment of Peace and Inter-State Relations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia,” with Trump, Aliyev, and Pashinyan present as witnesses.
A key element of the agreement was the creation of a transit corridor, popularly known as the “Trump Route,” through Armenia’s Syunik province. This corridor, often called the Zangezur Corridor, is intended to connect mainland Azerbaijan with its exclave Nakhchivan, enabling both domestic and international transportation while upholding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both countries.
