20 July 2026 17:44

Germany has appointed Dirk Lölke as its new ambassador to Azerbaijan, the German Federal Foreign Office told APA.

Lölke, who previously served as Germany’s ambassador to Oman, is expected to assume his diplomatic duties in Baku at the end of July.

The previous German ambassador to Azerbaijan, Ralf Horlemann, recently completed his diplomatic mission in the country.

Before his appointment to Baku, Lölke built a lengthy career in Germany’s diplomatic service.

Born in Stadthagen, Germany, on November 14, 1962, he studied classical philology and history at universities in Tübingen, Berlin, Cologne and Bonn from 1983 to 1991.

After completing his training in Bonn, Lölke joined the German Foreign Service and held various diplomatic positions, including at the German Embassy in Belgrade (1995–1998), the European Commission in Brussels (2000–2003), as Deputy Head of Mission in Asunción, Paraguay (2003–2005), as Head of the Cultural Division at the German Embassy in Rome (2010–2013), and in Head of Division roles at the Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Chancellery.
