Merz: Peace, stability in South Caucasus in Germany, EU’s interest

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said lasting peace, security and stability in the South Caucasus were in the interests of Germany and the European Union, highlighting the region’s geopolitical importance.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Merz said the political, security and economic interests of both Germany and Azerbaijan had been significantly affected by major wars, Caliber.Az reports per local media. 

“We also need peace, security, and stability in the South Caucasus. It is in the best interest of Germany and the European Union that this geopolitically important region stabilizes,” Merz said.

Congratulating Aliyev on the initialling of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the German chancellor said the accord represented a historic opportunity to overcome the long-running conflict.

"The mentioned agreement was signed by Azerbaijan and Armenia. This historic agreement provides a new chance to permanently overcome the long-standing conflict."

Merz also said that lasting peace, security and stability could ultimately be achieved only under the necessary conditions for a durable settlement.

"What gives us confidence here is that only under these conditions can lasting peace, security and stability ultimately be achieved," the Federal Chancellor emphasised.
