President Aliyev’s Berlin visit draws broad international media attention

The official visit of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to Germany attracted extensive coverage from national and regional media in Germany, as well as international news organisations, financial and stock market portals and leading think tanks.

An assessment of coverage published by more than 70 leading media outlets in Germany and around the world found that the visit was widely presented as a significant political event extending beyond the regional context and having implications for Europe’s energy architecture and the global geostrategic balance, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

The coverage included analytical articles, news reports and official statements, which were examined across several thematic areas.

High-level political contacts, strategic dialogue

German media primarily covered the visit in the context of energy security, economic institutionalisation and the bilateral agenda.

German government outlets, national television and radio broadcasters, financial news portals and regional media highlighted Berlin’s efforts to diversify its energy supplies and strengthen economic ties with Azerbaijan through new institutional frameworks.

The official website of the German Government, Bundesregierung.de, and the website of the Office of the Federal President, Bundespraesident.de, published updates on President Aliyev’s meetings in Berlin.

The reports focused on meetings between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. They highlighted discussions on the development of bilateral political dialogue, as well as stability and security issues in the South Caucasus.

Germany’s leading news agency, Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA), as well as widely read media outlets including Stern, News.de, Klamm.de and Deutsche Welle, also devoted significant coverage to the official proceedings and the main issues discussed during the visit.

Energy cooperation, plans to increase imports

Energy cooperation was among the issues that attracted the greatest interest from German media during the visit.

German media outlets including N-TV, Stern, Deutschlandfunk, Die Zeit, Deutsche Welle, Berliner Zeitung, Ostdeutsche Allgemeine, Epoch Times and Energy News Magazine cited remarks by Chancellor Friedrich Merz at a press conference and reported that Azerbaijan plays an important role in Germany’s efforts to reduce its dependence on traditional energy sources.

The reports also said that Germany intends to increase imports of natural gas and oil from Azerbaijan.

Several publications specifically highlighted Merz’s statement that Azerbaijan is a key partner in securing Germany’s energy supply.

Articles published by these media outlets, as well as by financial portals including Marketscreener, Onvista and Business-Panorama, also highlighted the potential for transporting Azerbaijani gas to Central European markets.

The reports further focused on President Ilham Aliyev’s position that the European Union should provide adequate financial and investment support for production and transit infrastructure needed to expand energy transit to Europe.

Azerbaijan-Germany Business Council

German financial and business media also focused on the practical economic outcomes of the visit.

German news portals including Presse Augsburg, Regionalheute, Pfalz-Express, Hasepost, Regiojournal Saarland, Foerde.news and Klamm.de provided extensive coverage of the establishment of the Azerbaijan-Germany Business Council and the signing of a Joint Declaration on its activities.

The websites of Deutsche Börse (the German stock exchange), and Yahoo Finance also analysed the positive impact that agreements reached with Azerbaijan in the energy and industrial sectors could have on European financial markets.

Meanwhile, Welt, Handelsblatt, Deutsche Börse, Neue Westfälische and Upday published the views of President Ilham Aliyev and Chancellor Friedrich Merz in response to a question from a local journalist concerning alleged closed-door meetings between German politicians in Baku.

Coverage by international media

International media outlets also focused on President Aliyev’s official visit to Berlin and the press conference held during the trip.

Media in European Union countries paid particular attention to the legal aspects of the visit.

The Italian news agency Agenzia Nova highlighted the legal basis of the visit and the expansion of the strategic framework between Azerbaijan and Germany.

The agency devoted significant coverage to the legal and political substance of the Joint Declaration on the Strategic Agenda for Bilateral Partnership, signed by President Ilham Aliyev and Chancellor Friedrich Merz. It emphasised that the document raises bilateral relations between Baku and Berlin to a higher institutional level.

International news agencies and foreign publications including Reuters, Bloomberg, US News, the Kyiv Post, Meduza and Nau.ch, as well as Russian media outlets such as TASS, Kommersant, RBC.ru, Lenta.ru, The Moscow Times and Forbes Russia, focused on the press conference.

Citing remarks made during the event, these publications reported on informal meetings held in Baku between former German and Russian officials.

Broader geostrategic significance

The broad interest shown by German and international media indicates that President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Berlin was viewed not only through the prism of bilateral relations, but also as a wider geostrategic event.

The coverage connected the visit with issues including energy security in the South Caucasus and Europe, the expansion of transport capabilities and the development of Azerbaijan’s economic and political ties with Germany.

Analytical articles in leading publications presented Azerbaijan as strengthening its strategic role in Europe’s energy supply and in the institutionalisation of economic partnerships.
