On August 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by phone with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
President Zelenskyy congratulated Aliyev on the progress made in the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan, facilitated by U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting the historic significance of the August 8 meeting in Washington, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
President Aliyev expressed gratitude for the congratulations and stressed that the agreements reached—including the U.S.-witnessed joint declaration and accompanying documents—will help establish lasting peace, stability, and prosperity in the South Caucasus region.
The two leaders also discussed bilateral ties between Azerbaijan and Ukraine, noting the recent meeting of the intergovernmental commission in Baku and productive talks on expanding economic and trade cooperation.
Both sides condemned the deliberate Russian airstrikes targeting SOCAR’s oil storage facilities and other Azerbaijani-owned infrastructure in Ukraine, including the gas compressor station that supplies Azerbaijani gas to Ukraine. They reaffirmed that such attacks will not disrupt their ongoing energy cooperation.
On the same day, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also called President Aliyev.
President Tokayev congratulated Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people on the landmark agreements reached in the United States aimed at normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia. He emphasized the historic nature of these developments and expressed hope they would foster comprehensive regional cooperation.
President Aliyev thanked Tokayev for the congratulations and underscored the importance of the U.S.-witnessed declaration and related agreements in securing durable peace and stability. He acknowledged the key role played by U.S. President Donald Trump in supporting the process.
Aliyev also highlighted that the agreement ensuring unhindered transport connections between mainland Azerbaijan and its Nakhchivan exclave will positively impact the transit capacity of the Middle Corridor.
He expressed appreciation for Kazakhstan’s role in hosting peace talks between the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia last May and its overall contribution to the peace process.
The leaders exchanged views on prospects for deepening Azerbaijan-Kazakhstan relations going forward.
