Azerbaijan, UN mull climate action, sustainable development goals PHOTO
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has met with Gwi Yeop Son, Regional Director of the UN Development Coordination Office (UNDCO) for Europe and Central Asia.
The discussion focused on enhancing cooperation between Azerbaijan and various UN agencies and preparing for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the ministry told Caliber.Az.
Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), noting that the country is among the few countries that regularly and voluntarily submit reports on their SDG implementation.
The FM emphasized the importance of humanitarian demining, which Azerbaijan has declared as its 18th national sustainable development goal. This initiative, relevant to many countries, is actively promoted within the UN.
Minister Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan’s longstanding support for environmental initiatives, noting the introduction of green technologies and the Smart Village and Smart City concepts in territories liberated from occupation. These efforts demonstrate Azerbaijan's proactive stance in integrating sustainable practices.
Gwi Yeop Son praised Azerbaijan’s active role in promoting multilateralism and its innovative approach to environmental issues. She emphasized the importance of addressing regional impacts of climate change, particularly focusing on water-related risks.
