As a result of negotiations between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Azerbaijani Embassy in this country has resumed its activity at a new location since July 15.
The ambassador and the staff of the embassy have returned to Iran, the Foreign Ministry told Caliber.Az.
The Iranian side, as a country of accreditation, as per its obligation to ensure security within the framework of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, has taken measures to ensure diplomatic security in front of the new building of the Embassy. Work is currently underway to organize consular services at the Embassy and more information on this will be provided shortly.
The embassy is located in Tehran's Darrus neighbourhood, at the intersection of Shahrizad Avenue, Yarmuhammadi Street, Saghi dead end and Firuzkuh Street, in house number 8.
The re-establishment of the Embassy will contribute to the further development of Azerbaijani-Iranian relations based on mutual respect, fulfilment of agreements reached between the two countries and issues to be resolved.
The embassy of Azerbaijan in Tehran was attacked on 27 January 2023, at around 08:00 a.m. local time. The perpetrator passed by the guard post with a Kalashnikov rifle and opened fire inside the embassy, while its staff tried to neutralize him. The head of the embassy's security service, Orkhan Asgarov, was killed in the attack, while two guards were injured. Shortly after, a suspect was detained by Iranian police.
The State Security Service of Azerbaijan opened a criminal investigation of the attack. President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev strongly condemned the attack. The Azerbaijani side regarded the incident as a "terrorist act". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan announced the evacuation of the embassy personnel in Tehran. On 29 January Azerbaijan evacuated most of the embassy staff from Tehran and suspended the embassy's operation.
