Azerbaijani MFA responds to Yerevan's false representation of President Aliyev's speech

25 December 2022 19:57

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan rejects the statement made by the Armenian Foreign Ministry, which distorted the essence of the words of the President of Azerbaijan stated during a meeting with representatives of Western Azerbaijan’s community on December 24.

As Caliber.Az reports, the ministry has issued its response to the Armenian claim that Azerbaijan is not interested in peace and stability in the region, which flouts international law and is nothing but hypocrisy.

“We would like to remind the Armenian side that despite the 30-year occupation of Azerbaijani lands by Armenia, the expulsion of hundreds of thousands of Azerbaijanis from their homelands and mass killings, Azerbaijan has remained committed to the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict for 25 years.

Despite the fact that Azerbaijan emerged as the winner in the course of the 44-day war Azerbaijan and liberated the occupied territories, it was our country that took the initiative to conclude a peace agreement with Armenia”.

The statement stresses that the Armenian side’s claim that Azerbaijan is violating the Prague and Sochi agreements and is obstructing the peace process was also groundless.

“We note that, according to the Prague and Sochi agreements, all problems must be solved on the basis of the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and inviolability of borders. However, Armenia’s territorial claims to Azerbaijan, as well as the situation on the Lachin Road, demonstrate that Armenia’s interference in the sovereign affairs of Azerbaijan continues.

Along with this, the unacceptable conditions put forward by Armenia ahead of the meeting of the leaders of the two countries in December in Brussels, as well as its refusal to participate in the meeting of the foreign ministers on December 23 in Moscow, clearly demonstrate which side is creating obstacles to the peace process”, the statement of the Azerbaijani’s ministry highlighted.

Caliber.Az recalls, that President Ilham Aliyev and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan were scheduled to meet in Brussels on December 7 under the mediation of European Council President Charles Michel. However, Azerbaijan canceled the meeting when Armenia put forward a last-minute unreasonable condition, demanding that French President Emmanuel Macron be present at the meeting.
