Azerbaijani official describes hosting COP29 as huge responsibility
Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Special Assignments Elchin Amirbayov has said that hosting such a prestigious event as COP29 is a huge responsibility, which assists in raising domestic awareness on climate issues.
“COP29 is the most important event when the matter rests in one of the biggest challenges facing the entire world, namely, climate change and all these consequences that all countries face. As our country is known as a hydrocarbon country with an economy based on natural gas and oil exploration, we have been aware for several years that we must ensure the transition to green and renewable energy, which is one of the strategic goals of our government,” he said in an interview with the Brazilian Correio Braziliense newspaper.
Amirbayov also noted that Azerbaijan seeks to strengthen trade ties with Brazil.
“Brazil could, for example, increase imports from Azerbaijan in the field of fertilisers, which is very important for our economy. We also have a very good situation in the aviation industry because we buy a lot of aircraft. We also want the number of tourists to increase, because the best way to represent the country is a direct flight, and we should work on this issue to make stops along the way as short as possible,” he noted.
Amirbayov touched upon the further steps in relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
“I think the further steps are clear as we are negotiating the text of the peace agreement, which was worked out by Azerbaijan and presented to Armenia a year and a half ago. Important work on this text has already been done, but we still have some issues that should be resolved. We believe that in the coming months we will do our best to complete this work, as we believe that this agreement will create an important context for the peaceful coexistence of the two countries in the coming years and decades. There is a great opportunity to end this hostility once and for all,” he stressed.
