Azerbaijani ombudsman comments on mine explosion incident in Jabrayil
Azerbaijani Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) Sabina Aliyeva has repeatedly appealed to the international community that the anti-tank and anti-personnel mines planted by Armenia in the previously occupied territories of Azerbaijan pose a big threat to the life and health of people, and urged to put an end to this situation.
“The internally displaced people can not return to their native lands, many people are dying and are injured as a result of the mine problem in the liberated lands,” Ombudsman’s office told Report.
“Another Azerbaijani citizen suffered as a result of an anti-personnel mine explosion. Rukhin Valiyev, an employee of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA), suffered when he was on a duty in the liberated Jabrayil district. His left foot was amputated. Unfortunately, international organisations do not take concrete actions in relation to mines, which remain a potential threat to human life, resulting in the death or injury of innocent civilians.
“As the Azerbaijani ombudsman, I once again express my great concern about the threat posed by mines. I remind Armenia of its obligation to respect international law and call on international organisations to support Azerbaijan in this issue by taking a fair approach and expressing a firm position,” the message said.
