Baku to host intl conference on Saint Martin's struggle against French, Dutch colonialism
An international conference focused on the colonial island of Saint Martin, which remains under the control of France and the Netherlands, will take place in Baku, initiated by the Baku Initiative Group.
The conference, titled “French and Dutch Colonialism in Saint Martin – One Island, One People, One Destiny,” will feature representatives from the people of Saint Martin, who are actively resisting colonialism and striving for freedom, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
The event will also include leaders of organizations opposed to colonialism, parliamentarians, human rights advocates, NGO leaders, decolonization experts, and researchers.
The conference will address the ongoing struggle of the people of Saint Martin for liberation from French and Dutch colonial rule, efforts to bring this issue to the agenda of relevant international organizations, and international legal mechanisms to support their cause.
Saint Martin is distinct from other colonies due to its unique historical and post-colonial features. The island was colonized by both France and the Netherlands and has been divided between the two countries since 1648.
The French part of the island is known as Saint Martin, while the Dutch side is called Sint Maarten. Both empires imposed their systems of governance, culture, and law on the island, making it heavily dependent on their influence.
The colonial legacy continues to affect the island's economic and political spheres, with the strong influence of France and the Netherlands creating barriers for the people of Saint Martin in their quest to determine their own future.
This event in Baku will serve as a platform to call for international support for the people of Saint Martin in their pursuit of self-determination.
