Bulgarian PM: "We have shown a strong position in the energy sector" And signed an agreement with Azerbaijan
The Bulgarian government realized that it had to show a strong position in the energy sector and therefore immediately began to look for alternatives to Russian supplies. An example of this is the agreement with Azerbaijan, according to which Bulgaria will be able to receive gas.
These views were expressed in an article by Bulgarian Prime Minister, Kirill Petkov, in the influential German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
The article highlights the war in Ukraine, the suspension of Russian gas supplies, also Bulgaria as a country highly dependent on supplies from this country.
Petkov said that Russia's attack on Ukraine forced many countries, including Bulgaria, to make an existential choice.
"The choice between dependence and sovereignty, long-term security and short-term stability, liberal democracy and nationalism," he explained.
According to Petkov, Russia, by suspending gas supplies to Bulgaria, has several goals, including destabilization of a European country, returning Bulgaria to Moscow's sphere of influence, and sowing discord among EU countries by showing that there are "second-class" countries such as Bulgaria.
