Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan begin laying Trans-Caspian fibre-optic cable

31 July 2026 12:13

Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan have started laying a Trans-Caspian fibre-optic cable across the seabed of the Caspian Sea, marking a significant step in strengthening regional digital connectivity, media reports said.

According to Caliber.Az, citing Kazakh media outlets, a cable-laying vessel has departed from the port of Baku and is en route to Aktau, where the project will continue. The installation process along the seabed is expected to take between 15 and 20 days.

The project is scheduled to be completed and brought into operation by the end of 2026.

Once operational, the Trans-Caspian fibre-optic line will establish a direct high-speed data link between Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Officials say the project will play a key role in advancing digital infrastructure across the region, improving connectivity and data transmission capacity between the two countries.
