Emmys spotlight global crisis: Celebrities demand immediate Gaza ceasefire PHOTO
At this year’s Emmy Awards, some of television’s biggest stars used their spotlight to call for an end to the conflict in Gaza, expressing solidarity through fashion statements and powerful speeches.
Hannah Einbinder, who won the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for Hacks, wore a red Artists4Ceasefire pin on the red carpet, joining fellow actors Aimee Lou Wall and Natasha Rothwell from White Lotus, Ruth Negga from Presumed Innocent, and Chris Perfetti of Abbott Elementary in visibly supporting the movement. The pin urges the US government to call for “an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost,” The Guardian reports.
Spanish actor Javier Bardem, nominated this year for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, made a bold statement by wearing a Palestinian keffiyeh scarf. On the red carpet, Bardem stated he “cannot work with someone who justifies or supports the genocide.” He added, “Me not getting jobs is absolutely irrelevant compared to what is going on there,” underscoring his commitment to the cause.
Megan Stalter, also from Hacks, carried a purse emblazoned with the word “Ceasefire!” written in marker, further amplifying the call for peace.
During her acceptance speech, Einbinder concluded with a defiant message: “Go birds, fuck Ice and free Palestine,” before music played her off stage. Backstage, she shared with the media, “I have friends in Gaza who are working as frontline workers, as doctors, right now in the north of Gaza, to provide care for pregnant women, and [working] for schoolchildren to create schools in the refugee camps.”
Emphasizing her Jewish identity, Einbinder said, “I feel like it is my obligation as a Jewish person to distinguish Jews from the state of Israel because our religion and our culture is such an important and longstanding … institution that is really separate to the ethno-nationalist state.”
She is among thousands in the film industry—including Bardem, Ava DuVernay, Joaquin Phoenix, and Emma Stone—who signed the Film Workers for Palestine pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions. Einbinder stated, “Boycotting is an effective tool to create pressure on the powers that be to meet the moment.”
Artists4Ceasefire, whose red pin has become a recurring emblem at major awards ceremonies since 2023, states it aims “to amplify the global call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the return of all hostages, and the immediate delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilians in Gaza.”
