EU aims to deepen energy cooperation with Azerbaijan in 2025
The European Union is confident that 2025 will mark a significant step forward in strengthening energy cooperation with Azerbaijan.
"Given the current situation in the EU regarding gas supplies, the prospects, and our shared plans to increase gas shipments from Azerbaijan and expand the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), we are confident that 2025 will be a year of further deepening our bilateral energy relations," EU official representative said, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
According to him, this will help ensure greater diversification of energy supplies, aimed at ending imports of Russian resources.
The spokesperson emphasized that the past year had been another successful phase in the implementation of the strategic partnership between the EU and Azerbaijan in the energy sector.
"Energy transition aspects in our strategic partnership took centre stage in 2024, particularly as Azerbaijan chaired the UN Climate Change Conference [COP29]. We are especially pleased that our joint efforts to tackle methane emissions in oil and gas supply chains are yielding results under the Global Methane Pledge," the EU representative added.
The EU and Azerbaijan plan to continue collaboration on the Southern Gas Corridor: "Of course, this depends on commercial viability and market demand. The EU continues to provide political support for gas supplies through the SGC, and commercial players are aware that Azerbaijan is a key gas supplier to the EU consumer market."
Commenting further, representative stressed that, market participants will need to assess the real opportunities and negotiate the commercial terms for increasing volumes, which will serve as the basis for investments in expanding pipeline capacity.
