EU applauds progress as Azerbaijan and Armenia's peace agreement moves forward
The European Union has welcomed the recent agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the conclusion of negotiations on the draft Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Inter-State Relations.
In a statement issued by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Vice President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, the EU expressed its approval, Caliber.Az reports.
"The European Union welcomes the respective statements of Armenia and Azerbaijan on the conclusion of negotiations on the draft Agreement on Peace and the Establishment of Inter-State Relations," the statement reads.
“We commend both sides for their persistent work over the past few years in this direction, both on the bilateral track and with the involvement of the international community. The EU welcomes Armenia paving the way for the finalisation of the text.”
The EU emphasized that this development represents a decisive step towards lasting peace and security in the region. “It is key to keep this momentum and ensure smooth completion of this process with the same forward-looking and compromise-oriented approach, from both sides.”
The statement further highlights the EU's unwavering support for the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process and reiterates its readiness to provide additional support and expertise, should both sides request it.
This EU statement comes after the March 13 announcement by Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry, which reaffirmed Baku's commitment to continuing dialogue with Armenia after successfully concluding negotiations on the draft peace agreement.
On Armenia’s side, the Armenian Foreign Ministry confirmed that Yerevan had accepted Azerbaijan’s proposals on the two remaining disputed issues, signalling that the peace agreement is now ready for formal signing.
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also confirmed that both nations had reached an agreement on the terms of the draft treaty and reiterated Azerbaijan’s commitment to advancing the peace and stability dialogue in the South Caucasus.
