EU "monitoring mission" spotted again near Azerbaijan’s border VIDEO

15 February 2025 20:43

Members of the European Union’s so-called “monitoring mission” in Armenia have once again been observed conducting surveillance near Azerbaijan’s border.

On February 13, the mission members were seen monitoring areas near Gubadly, using binoculars to observe Azerbaijani territory. As in previous instances, Azerbaijani border guards closely monitored and documented their activities, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The EU’s monitoring mission, deployed in Armenia under the pretext of promoting stability, has repeatedly conducted observations along the border with Azerbaijan. These activities have raised concerns in Baku, given their potential implications for regional security.

Azerbaijan continues to keep the situation under control, ensuring the sovereignty and security of its borders.

The European Union launched its monitoring mission in Armenia (EUMA) in February 2023, initially deploying 138 observers to the region. By the end of 2023, the EU expanded the mission’s personnel to 209, with the initiative set to continue until 2027. The EU allocated over €39 million to fund the mission for two years.

Recently, European Union ambassadors in Brussels approved an extension of the mission for an additional two years, ensuring its presence along Armenia’s border regions until at least February 19, 2027. According to Armenian media reports, the mission’s mandate will remain unchanged, with a team comprising 165 foreign nationals and 44 Armenian personnel. No modifications have been made to its structure or the number of observers.

Despite being presented as a stabilizing force, the EU mission’s activities—particularly its routine surveillance of Azerbaijan’s border areas—have drawn scrutiny in Baku. Azerbaijan continues to monitor these operations closely, viewing them as a matter of national security.
