EU top diplomat uncertain of support for Ukraine under Trump administration
Josep Borrell, the outgoing European Union foreign policy chief, expressed uncertainty about the EU's ability to continue providing full support to Ukraine if there is a shift in US policy under a potential Donald Trump administration.
Speaking at a geopolitics forum in Brussels, Borrell acknowledged the concerns raised by Ukrainians regarding the future of Western support in the event of a change in the US approach to the Ukrainian conflict, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"What will be the EU's response to a possible change in the US approach to Ukraine? What will the EU do if the Americans stop supporting Ukraine?" Borrell reflected, quoting questions he had been asked during his visits to Kyiv and Donbas in early 2022. He recalled that Ukrainians had asked him whether Europe would support them if Russia attacked, a question to which he could not offer a firm "yes" at the time due to uncertainties. Now, the same question persists, with the potential reduction of US assistance to Ukraine adding to the complexity of the issue.
As Borrell prepares to step down from his role on December 1, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is set to take over the position of EU foreign policy chief. On the same day, the new European Commission, under the leadership of Ursula von der Leyen, will officially begin its work.
