Finnish police investigate incident involving damaged communication cable in Baltic Sea

19 November 2024 22:48

The Finnish police has launched an investigation into an incident involving damage to the C-Lion1 submarine communication cable, which connects Finland and Germany across the Baltic Sea.

According to a statement from the Finnish police, the investigation was prompted by a request from Cinia Oy, the Finnish company responsible for the cable, Caliber.Az reports.

The company reported the fault in the C-Lion1 cable, which led to its disconnection and suspension of service.

"The Central Criminal Police received a request for investigation from Cinia Oy regarding the cable breakage in the Baltic Sea. An investigation into the incident is underway," the Finnish police press service stated.

C-Lion1 is the first submarine telecommunications cable to be directly laid between Finland and Germany. Cinia Oy announced that the cable had encountered a fault, rendering it out of service.

The governments of both Finland and Germany have expressed concern over the incident. Both Berlin and Helsinki have called for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the cable damage, which is crucial for communications between the two countries.

The cable is 1,173 kilometers long and runs between Santahamina in Helsinki and Rostock in Germany, and represents the only data communications cable that runs from the Nordic country directly to Central Europe.

It follows a similar route to the Russia-to-Germany Nord Stream gas pipelines, which exploded in September 2022 in an apparent act of sabotage.

Another telecommunications cable in the Baltic Sea running between Lithuania and Sweden's Gotland island was damaged on November 17 morning.
