FM Szijjártó says cooperation with Baku reduces Hungary’s energy risks "posed by EU"
Cooperation between Hungary and Azerbaijan reduces risks to Budapest’s energy security and strengthens the long-term diversification of supplies, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has said.
His remarks were shared on social media by Zoltán Kovács, Secretary of State for International Communications at the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, per Caliber.Az.

Kovács recalled that under agreements between Azerbaijan’s SOCAR and the Hungarian company MVM ONEnergy, a framework deal has been signed for the purchase of 800 million cubic meters of natural gas over two years.
“The deal between MVM and SOCAR provides for a daily import of 1.1 million cubic meters,” Kovács said, noting that this represents a key step toward diversifying Hungary’s energy supply.
He also quoted Szijjártó on the country’s energy security stance.
“Diversification means buying energy from as many sources and via as many routes as possible, the minister stated, adding that this contrasts with Brussels' costly and narrow approach. He warned that EU policies pose a threat to Hungary’s energy security, while cooperation with Baku reduces that risk.
“FM Szijjártó recalled early skepticism about Hungary’s ties with Azerbaijan, but said history proved them right. Western leaders once mocked us, now they line up for meetings in Baku, he said. Our partnership isn’t based on oil prices, but on mutual respect and long-term benefits for both countries,” Kovács added.
