Azerbaijan’s Absheron good location for data centres, former PM says

08 September 2026 16:15

Azerbaijan’s Absheron Peninsula is a good location for data centres; there is wind, water and solar energy there, Former Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme has said at a forum held as part of Baku Climate Action Week.

Leterme clarified that he would allocate funds to improve the grids wherever there is no optimal solution, and to locate data centres, at least in places where there is a high demand for new energy, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

The former PM noted that If he had $1 billion, he would invest in strengthening electricity grids.

“It would be logical to locate data centres in areas where new energy is available. The Absheron Peninsula is a good example of this. There is wind, water and solar energy here,” he explained.

In his words, data centres consume large amounts of water and energy, and their locations should therefore take into account the availability of the necessary resources and the capacity of the electricity grid.

According to him, the world’s major centres where decisions are made and data is used are often not located in areas with significant energy potential.

“Belgium is one of the few countries in the world without underground energy resources. Nevertheless, it is home to NATO headquarters, the main headquarters of European Union institutions and other organisations,” he underscored.
