France condemns strikes on Iran’s civilian sites, FM says
France has firmly opposed any strikes on Iran’s civilian infrastructure, cautioning that such actions could escalate regional tensions, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said in an interview with France Info.
“We are against any strikes on civilian infrastructure,” Barrot stated, commenting on US President Donald Trump’s threats to target civilian and energy facilities if Iran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Barrot warned that such strikes “would open a new phase of escalation and retaliation… which would worsen an already alarming situation.” He added, “There is a risk that we could witness an unlimited regional conflict.”
Highlighting the economic implications, Barrot stressed the importance of reopening the Strait of Hormuz, noting that its closure poses risks to the global economy. He also emphasized France’s role in mitigating the conflict’s impact and supporting regional efforts to resolve the crisis.
“This is a war we did not choose, and its consequences we must manage,” he said.
In addition, Barrot reiterated calls for the release of two French citizens detained in Tehran, describing their conditions as extremely difficult, and urging Iranian authorities to ensure their safety.
