France: EU’s 16th sanctions package targets Russian energy sector
The latest package of EU sanctions against Russia will affect the country’s energy sector, said French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.
“The 16th package of sanctions will primarily target Russia’s energy resources,” he said, Caliber.Az reports per French media.
According to him, the restrictive measures will also apply to certain "players in countries that facilitate sanctions evasion."
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the European Union has introduced sweeping and unprecedented sanctions. These build upon restrictions first imposed in 2014 following Russia’s annexation of Crimea and its failure to implement the Minsk agreements.
The sanctions include individual measures targeting those who support, fund, or facilitate actions undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty, as well as broad economic restrictions designed to weaken Russia’s ability to sustain its aggression. Diplomatic and visa-related sanctions have also been enforced.
Sanctions on individuals consist of travel bans and asset freezes. Sanctions on entities consist of asset freezes.
In addition, the EU has imposed sanctions on Belarus, Iran, and North Korea due to their military support for Russia’s war against Ukraine.
