France prepares Hormuz role as Iran–US agreement takes effect
French President Emmanuel Macron has said that assets from a UK–France mission are ready for deployment following announcements by Washington and Tehran of an agreement aimed at ending the war involving the United States and Israel against Iran, which reportedly began in February.
The comments come after both the United States and Iran said they had reached a deal to end the conflict, with a formal signing expected on Friday, June 19, in Switzerland.
Under the agreement announced late on Sunday, Iran and the United States committed to an “immediate and permanent” cessation of military operations across all fronts, including Lebanon. The deal also includes the lifting of blockades on the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) flows passed before the war began on 28 February.
Macron, who is scheduled to host U.S. President Donald Trump at a G7 meeting later on Monday, said: “The UK-France mission's "assets are in place and ready to be deployed".”
He also emphasised the importance of restoring maritime traffic for global stability, adding: “The resumption of maritime traffic, without restrictions or tolls, is an essential condition for regional stability and the global economy," he said in a post on X.
