Georgia hails Black Sea subsea cable “transformational” energy project
Georgia is positioning itself to fully harness its energy potential through a landmark project to lay an underwater electricity cable along the Black Sea floor, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced.
Speaking at the Leaders’ Dialogue during Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Kobakhidze described the initiative as a “transformational project” and highlighted its role in connecting Europe and Asia via energy infrastructure, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
The forum’s main theme was “The Middle Corridor – Connecting Europe and Asia through Energy,” emphasizing regional integration and renewable energy development.
The subsea cable agreement, signed in December 2022 by Georgia, Azerbaijan, Romania, and Hungary, will transmit electricity from Georgia to European markets. Georgian officials have consistently underscored the country’s abundant renewable energy resources and its strategic potential as a regional energy transit hub.
“We will increase our generating capacity and establish electricity production for export. We will also access other European markets. Without implementing this project, it will be difficult for us to fully utilize our energy resources,” Kobakhidze said.
The prime minister further emphasized the project’s mutually beneficial nature, noting that it will enhance Georgia’s overall productivity in the electricity sector while strengthening regional energy cooperation
