Georgian parliamentarian praises Azerbaijan for hosting COP29
Chairman of the Georgian Parliament's Committee on Foreign Relations, Nikoloz Samkharadze, has congratulated Azerbaijan on organizing the international event COP29 in Baku.
He emphasized the significance of this conference not only for the South Caucasus but also for Azerbaijan itself, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Samkharadze remarked, "COP29 in Azerbaijan is an important and joyful event for Georgia as well. I wish success to the organizers of the event."
He underscored the global nature of climate change, stating, "It is crucial to discuss and study such global issues in the South Caucasus. World leaders will participate in COP29, and this forum will allow us to address the climate challenges facing our region."
The chairman noted that the high regard for Azerbaijan's initiative by the international community further highlights its significance. He added that hosting such a major conference in Baku reaffirms Azerbaijan's role as an important country not only in the region but also on the global stage.
"We are very pleased that this conference will take place in Baku, and we wish the organizers every success," Samkharadze said.
He also mentioned that recent elections were held in Georgia, and the new parliament would prioritize close cooperation with Azerbaijan.
"I am confident that in the next four years, the friendly and brotherly relations between Baku and Tbilisi will deepen. Climate change is a problem for the entire world and does not spare the Caucasus region. As parliamentarians, we will discuss such global issues," he concluded.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Azerbaijan on November 11-22. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary session in Dubai on December 11, 2023. During two weeks, Baku will become a global hub, welcoming around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aimed at preventing dangerous human interference with the climate system.
