Georgia's ruling party accuses German official of interfering in election process
A new allegation of foreign interference in Georgia's upcoming parliamentary elections has emerged, involving a German politician.
Givi Mikanadze, a representative of the ruling Georgian Dream party, disclosed that Michael Roth, chairman of the German Bundestag's foreign relations committee, played a role in assisting Georgian citizens living abroad to register for the upcoming elections, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
"This clearly constitutes foreign interference in the election process," Mikanadze declared, emphasizing the seriousness of the issue.
He also noted that this is not the first instance of interference by Western countries in Georgia's elections. According to Mikanadze, the U.S. Embassy frequently criticizes the Georgian Dream's policies on social media, adding to tensions surrounding the election.
Georgia’s parliamentary elections are scheduled for October 26, with the ruling Georgian Dream party facing off against opposition forces, including those led by current President Salome Zourabichvili and the United National Movement party, founded by former President Mikheil Saakashvili.
It is also worth noting that Michael Roth has previously made controversial statements regarding Azerbaijan.
