Georgian official: Black Sea region sees historic opportunity in Baku-Yerevan peace
Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has emphasised the historic opportunity presented by the ongoing peace efforts between Azerbaijan and Armenia, saying the agreement has already transformed security dynamics in the South Caucasus and opened up significant economic and connectivity potential for the Black Sea region.
He also welcomed steps toward the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Türkiye, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
"I would also like to highlight the historic opportunity before our wider region: the ongoing efforts toward a lasting peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Peace on the ground has already been achieved, thus transforming the security landscape of the South Caucasus and unlocking immense economic and connectivity potential for the entire Black Sea region. We also welcome steps towards normalisation of relations between Armenia and Turkiye,” Papuashvili stated.
Speaking at the 66th General Assembly of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Organisation of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation (PABSEC), Papuashvili stressed the importance of regional cooperation despite challenges.
He highlighted that long-term peace, particularly in Ukraine, remains fundamental for stability, prosperity, and shared growth across Europe and the Black Sea area.
Papuashvili called for strengthened cooperation in connectivity projects, both physical and digital, as a central pillar for regional development. He pointed to the Middle Corridor as a key route for efficient and secure trade, and highlighted flagship initiatives such as the Black Sea submarine electricity cable, fibre-optic cable, and ferry-feeder services, which he said could transform regional connectivity.
The Georgian Parliament speaker urged countries in the Black Sea region to join efforts to ensure stability, security, and prosperity, emphasising that peace and collaborative development are mutually reinforcing goals.
