Georgian PM anticipates radical opposition protests after polls close

26 October 2024 17:57

The opposition in Georgia is expected to organize protests following the closure of polling stations at 8:00 PM, according to Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.

Kobakhidze remarked that the radical opposition, upon witnessing the election results, will likely attempt to challenge their defeat just hours after polls close, Caliber.Az reports citing Georgian media.

However, he asserted that they lack the public support needed for substantial protests.

He indicated that similar to the events in 2020, the opposition may seek to undermine the validity of the parliamentary election results and initiate demonstrations.

Regarding the current electoral process, Kobakhidze stated that no significant violations have been reported. “I have noted some complaints, such as polling stations opening at 8:04 instead of exactly at 8:00. While there may be minor disruptions, these do not reflect any serious issues. The key takeaway is that there have been no major violations in the election process,” he said during a briefing.

Irakli Garibashvili, chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, added after casting his vote that he advises the opposition to accept their impending electoral defeat and join in celebrating the success of the Georgian people.

“We have long recognized the opposition’s true nature. The public clearly sees that their interests lie not with the people of Georgia but with foreign agendas. They are aware of their losses and are failing once again,” Garibashvili stated.

Polling stations opened at 8:00 AM on October 26, and voting will continue until 8:00 PM. Georgian citizens can vote at 3,111 polling stations, including 67 set up abroad. Approximately 3.5 million voters are registered, with over 95,000 citizens living outside Georgia eligible to participate — marking a record high.

This election cycle is significant as it introduces electronic ballot boxes in 74% of polling stations, allowing nearly 90% of voters to benefit from this technology. Alongside the electronic voting devices, a voter verification system will also be implemented.

Local television channels plan to broadcast exit poll results immediately following the conclusion of voting.
