ICRC: Over 3,800 people still missing in Azerbaijan

30 August 2023 16:59

August 30 is marked as the International Day of the Disappeared.

“Along with the families and relatives of the missing, we remember them,” Azerbaijan’s office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) told APA.

There are still more than 3,800 missing due to the conflict in Azerbaijan.

“Tens of thousands of members of their families suffer because they do not know anything about their loved ones. It is impossible to describe the emotional exhaustion, life in constant uncertainty for decades. We are making every effort to support the work of authorised state bodies to know anything about missing people and render assistance to their family members.

Over the years of our activity, we have collected about 11,000 biological samples from family members of the missing and sent them to the State Commission on Prisoners of War, Hostages and Missing People of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Along with the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society, we collected detailed information about missing people from their families in 2008-2012 and shared it with the State Commission.

Moreover, we shared information about the proposed burial sites with the relevant agencies and supported the exhumation projects carried out in three districts by giving technical advice and providing with various means,” ICRC said.
