Iran condemns G7 statement on nuclear issue as "deceitful and distorted"
Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned a recent statement by the Group of Seven (G7) nations on the country’s nuclear program, accusing the group of misrepresentation and legal misconduct.
In a statement released on October 2, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei dismissed the G7’s support for the reimposition of United Nations Security Council resolutions against Iran as “unlawful and unjustified,” Caliber.Az reports per Tasnim.
He criticised the United States and three European signatories of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) for what he described as an abuse of the deal’s dispute resolution mechanism, calling their actions “a blatant violation of international law.”
He stressed that the position taken by the G7 can not in any way alter the “illegal” and “unjustified” nature of that action.
He also accused the United States of bearing full responsibility for the current impasse over Iran’s nuclear program, citing Washington’s unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018 and its continued “violations” of international agreements.
According to Baqaei, France, Germany, and the UK compounded the issue by “aligning themselves with US policies” and “failing to meet their own obligations under the deal.”
Baqaei also condemned US attacks on Iran’s nuclear plants together with Israel during sensitive diplomatic negotiations.
Baqaei accused G7 of ignoring Israel’s alleged “nuclear arsenal” while criticising Iran’s “peaceful nuclear facilities”. He labelled their position on non-proliferation as “hypocritical.”
The Iranian spokesman finalised that, “given their duplicitous and irresponsible conduct with respect to the rule of law and international peace and security, these seven countries lack any moral authority to lecture others.”
